An £80m regeneration project which is transforming an infamous London housing estate into a thriving community today reached a major milestone when the demolition of the last remaining tower block got underway.
Residents came together to celebrate as a monster muncher started to bring down the final 12 storey tower block, marking a historic moment for the Rainham estate, which achieved notoriety in recent years having appeared in the films Made in Dagenham and Fish Tank.
Orchard Village – previously known as the Mardyke Estate– was a 1960s high rise estate that over time became dilapidated and a haunt for anti social behaviour. The estate’s reputation for crime meant that no one on the housing list of over 4,000 wanted to live there, resulting in flats remaining empty.
